Analysis:
_ In
the novel A Journal of the Plague Year,
Daniel Defoe makes a sum total of 307 references to cities, streets, towns, or
parishes throughout London. Of these, the most predominant, places mentioned by
Defoe were St. Giles Parish with 21 references, Cripplegate Parish with 25
references, Southwark with 22 references, Aldgate with 23 references and White
Chapel with 27 references. The majority of these locations, along with all of
the locations mentioned in the novel for that matter, were mainly areas of
death and illness brought about by the plague. The most common, or dense areas
of reference (mentioned above) are either places that the narrator, H.F.,
visited, or other places that were affected by the illness. Moreover, the
parishes themselves contain the greatest frequency of reference in the novel.
This is because of the lists of death totals reported from the plague years, frequently
interspersed throughout the novel. These death tolls portray a trend that
reveals the rapid spreading of the disease. Using the data, a correlation between
both the plot of the novel and where the novel is set throughout the book,
particularly with regards to the parish death totals, is established as the
most frequently mentioned places are directly related to the most diseased
areas. While some places do not hold a high number of reference points, some of
these locations are still quite significant to the novel as well as the overall
theme of our project. These locations, such as Trafalgar Square and
Westminster, are notarized only few times in A Journal of the Plague Year but share a literary importance that
labels them as a center of literary merit in London.
